Canyon de Chelly
After leaving St. George, Utah, we headed east to Page, Arizona. Page is the home of Glen Canyon Dam. Wednesday morning we arrived bright and early for the first tour of the day of the dam. The dam was built in the late 50's for two purposes - to control the water and put water in reserve in times of drought, and to create electricity. It's quite an engineering marvel.
From Page, Az, we drove east to Kayenta, Arizona where we met up with our friends, Paul and Carol for lunch. We then continued onto Chinle, Arizona near Canyon de Chelly. On Thursday, we spent the day touring the Canyon Rim. The Canyon has two rim drives. We did the south rim drive in the morning. This included a 2 1/2 mile round trip hike into the canyon for a view of some anasazi ruins. After lunch, we did the north rim drive stopping at all of the viewpoints. After a nice dinner with Paul and Carol, we said our goodbyes to them. They were headed back to New Mexico to fly back home to Washington. We drove north to Bluff, Utah. We're getting ready to see the Monument Valley.
