Whitehorse to Fairbanks - August 2, 2005
We drove to Whitehorse and stayed there 3 nights. One day we took a hike to Miles Canyon. A very beautiful day. The next day we did a tour that involved taking a bus to Fraser,B.C. and then taking the train to Skagway. We wandered around Skagway for 3 hours and then took the bus back to Whitehorse. In Whitehorse, we also toured the Macbride Museum which had the cabin from Sam McGee and toured the SS Klondike II - a drydocked paddleweeler. One evening in Whitehorse we took a boat tour through Miles Canyon and up the Yukon river.
From Whitehorse to drove to Moose Creek Campground and spent one night. Then we arrived in Dawson City. We really enjoyed Dawson. Lots of interesting buildings and shops. We went to a Can Can show at the casino. We also tried our hand at gold panning. No luck there, but it was fun. There is a free place sponsered by the Klondike visitors association where you can pan for gold. We also drove part way up the Dempster highway to an area called Tombstone. We saw an animal that we still haven't identified. It ran across the road in front of us. It was probably a badger or a wolverine. We also saw a goat. And, Bob caught a grayling (fish). He was happy about that!
Next day we took a free ferry from Dawson across the Yukon to the beginning of the Top of the World Highway. It's unusual. You drive on the ferry and then they take about 5 minutes to get to the other side. They beach it and put down a ramp and you drive off. No docks of any kind on either side. We drove to Chicken where we had lunch. It was foggy and rainy and very smokey. We couldn't see much which was a disappointment. We spent the night in Tok. The next day we drove to Fairbanks. Bob drove to the Artic Circle. More about this in our next post.
