New York City..

On May 13, 2018 my daughter-in-law, Toddi, and grandson, Hudson, age 10, flew to New York City.  This was a trip to experience the city and show Hudson some of our nation's history.  He had read about the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island before the trip.

We made reservations to climb the crown - very important if you ever visit there.  We also made advance reservations for the 911 museum.

Our week started with us riding the AIR train from Newark Airport to Penn Station.  From there we walked with our luggage more than a mile to our timeshare.  Toddi's mom and dad were able to get us the Wyndam timeshare - a great location close to Grand Central Station.  There was also a convenient place to get groceries - the Amish Market - within a block.

Before leaving on the trip we purchased a NYC explorer pass through Costco.  Our first full day in the city we rode the Hop on Hop off bus completely around two loops.  After a late lunch, we had to find the Lego and M&M stores!  We secured our tickets to the top of the ROCK (Rockefeller center).  It was about 6:30 pm when we went up and we stayed until starting to get dark.

Tuesday was our day for the Statue of Liberty.  We rode the boat to the Statue and walked up to the crown.  It is quite small in the crown - only about 6 people fit at once.  We had a lovely day there - the weather was perfect.  Next up was Ellis Island.   About 1 in 3 Americans have ancestors who came through Ellis Island.

Wednesday we went to the 911 museum.  Hudson wasn't even born when 911 happened.  He learned a lot about the planes hitting the towers and the pentagon and the plane that crashed in Pennsylvania.  They have done a superb job on this museum.  It is sobering, but I would highly recommend it to anyone visiting NYC.  We visited St. Paul's Chapel where George Washington worshiped on his inauguration day.  We also walked the Brooklyn Bridge in the pouring rain.

Thursday we rode bikes in Central Park.  We used our NYC explorer pass to rent the bikes for the day.  The day started a little damp so our back ends were wet and muddy.  Fortunately by the end of the day we had dried off.  We rode around the loop once - Toddi clocked us at a little over 6 miles.  We rode around again - this time stopping to see different areas of the park.  A couple of places had turtles that Hudson loved watching.  Toddi's bike got a flat tire so while waiting for a replacement bike we had a Central Park hotdog.

Friday we walked to Central Park and through it to the Natural History Museum.  Now I want to again watch the Night at the Museum.  This museum is huge.  It is known for it's huge dinosaur skeletons. We just about closed the place down.  I had 22,000 steps on my fitbit by the time the day was done.

Saturday we went up in the Empire State Building but couldn't really see anything.  We knew it was going to be cloudy before going up in it.  It was pouring when we made it back to pick up our luggage and walk to Penn Station.  We finally caught a cab - Hudson wanted to know if he was Cash Cab.    We walked lots while in New York.  We took the subway to get to and from the Statue of Liberty dock and to and from the 911 Museum.  Both times men insisted that I sit down in their spot.  I also had a young male insist that I take his umbrella while walking the Brooklyn Bridge.  We found the New Yorkers to be extremely friendly.

Hudson loved that so many things in New York had his name - from the Hudson River to the Hudson Theater to of course - Hudson Eats.
